Chapter 14

Webb poured a second cup of coffee and sat at the island in the kitchen. It was too much stimulant on an empty stomach, still, he took a gulp and glanced out of the window to the rural setting. The morning stillness jarred him. He wanted the sound of the city to flood his mind and drown out his thoughts of Emma. The sudden yearning to return to her bed sent heat to lash him, and triggered an internal rebuke. She was off limits. Even if she welcomed him, which was doubtful, making love to her would only complicate an already increasingly difficult situation.

He’d watched as she slept last night. The wish to caress her and take her to him had clawed at him. The remembrance of what they’d shared during their short marriage had heightened his awareness.

Taking advantage of her desire to restart their failed relationship would only jeopardize what little trust she appeared to still have in him. He finished the last drop of coffee and refilled the mug for a third time. It might serve him right if acid burned his gut. Maybe that’s what he required to remind him she was out of bounds. His job was to keep her safe while he delivered the list and Ivan to his boss. Emma’s return to a life without him, his penance for the lies and the betrayal.

The third mug of coffee sat untouched on the island while he went to shower and dress for the long day ahead. Later, outfitted in blue jeans and a navy T-shirt, he checked on Ivan. Still sleeping, the poor guy needed it.

Webb’s stomach growled. What had Emma picked out at the store for their supplies? He’d been grateful to find the coffee. In the fridge he discovered eggs, cheese, milk and bread. He tossed six eggs into a pot of water to be cooked as soon as everyone was awake, then he sat at the island again. He stared at the cold mug of black coffee but shook his head.

With the “pay as you go” phone Emma had bought him, he dialed his boss for the third time.

Still, no response.

A grinding dread forced acid into his empty stomach. The private and secure number had never gone unanswered—until now. A premonition sent a shiver through him. Something’s wrong. Dammed wrong.

Procedure demanded he check with his boss before delivering Ivan and the list to his superiors. But now… “Shit.” If he couldn’t connect with the person in charge, there was no guarantee the meet would take place. If not, what would he do with the Russian and his information? If someone already infiltrated the Task Force, what then?

Better not to let Ivan know there appeared to be a glitch in the works. The guy had been shot and depended on the whole team to protect him now. If Ivan believed they couldn’t, he might bolt and disappear with the vital data. Or worst yet, he might run, be captured by the enemy, and be compelled to release the secret list to the enemy.
